Danish Parliament consider nationwide road pricing

On january 29. 2009, a wide majority of the political parties in the danish parliament, decided to introduce nationwide road pricing. The current plan is to introduce road pricing for goods traffic in 2011 and to cars in 2015.

With the road pricing system, in the future motorists will pay only half of todays vehicle registation fee in change of paying per kilometre driven as weel.

At a hearing in january 2009 made by The Danish Board of Technology, it was made clear that techical limits and scheme design challenges makes the planned schedule quite ambitious.

 Municipal Forum belives that:

  • excisting and reliable technologies already used within Europe is to be chosen first
  • a solution using camera (ANPR) and onboard-units (DSRC) is to be used  in toll rings in Copenhagen and other major cities in Denmark right away
  • a nationwide road pricing system is a long run solution, and is not to be deployed until technology and scheme design is ready to implemention
