Valletta (Malta)

Valletta

The first of May 2007, the capital of Malta introduced a comprehensive road pricing system. The purpose is to improve accessibility and environment by reducing traffic in the central part of the city.

Charge

The road pricing system is based on automatic number plate recognition (ANPR). The amount charged is based on the duration of the stay and it replaces parking fees as well. Charges are only applied in times with high congestion

The first 30 mins are free, the next 30 mins you pay € 0.82. The following hours are charged € 0.82 with a maximum of € 6.52 a day.

Fewer cars - more public transport

The system has proved its effectiveness by reducing stays of 5 hours or longer with more than 50 percent.

The public transportation systems are also profiting from the new system, and buses in the central part of the city saw a slight increase in passengers shortly after the system was effectuated.
